Evolution Martial Arts’ Mark Baldry has won bronze at the WAKO World Championships.
Baldry was representing Team GB in Dublin, and had been putting himself through a tough training regime in the build-up to the competition to ensure he was in the best shape possible.
He fought in the men’s veteran -94kg light continuous category after being selected by the Great Britain team back in July, after winning the WAKO National Great Britain Championships.
A total of 779 competitors (one per country in each category) from 60 different nations - including South Korea, Chile, Australia, South Africa, Russia, Italy and more - competed for glory.
Following the weigh-ins and opening ceremony, the elimination rounds begun.
Baldry received a bye to the quarter-finals, where he beat the USA’s Kelly Cannon with a unanimous decision.
Next up was hungarian Istvan Toth, the reigning World Champion.
But after some top-class fighting, Baldry lost out narrowly on a 2-1 decision, but this was enough for bronze.
