Champ on top form to end Tom's hopes

Tom Jarvis was beaten by the eventual champion as he represented England at the Czech Youth Open in Hodonin.

The 16-year-old Skegness Grammar School pupil was seeded 14th for the singles, which meant he skipped the group stage and went straight into the last 64.

There, world number 45 Junior Jarvis defeated Zihni Sahin of Turkey 4-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-9, 11-7), and he followed up by coming from 3-2 down to beat Adam Brat of Slovakia 4-3 (8-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5) in the last 32.

In the last 16, he faced Japan’s world number 16 and fourth seed Yukiya Uda.

But despite having beaten Uda twice previously, Jarvis found his opponent in top form as he was brushed aside 4-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8) as Uda went on to lift the trophy.

Jarvis was unbeaten in the team event as England defeated Austria B 3-1 and Turkey 3-0 in their group to advance to a last-16 tie against Belarus.

But despite Jarvis’ two victories in that match - including beating world number 18 junior Aliaksandr Khanin - they were beaten 3-2.

In the doubles, Jarvis and his England teammate Luke Savill were beaten 3-1 by Gal Farfel and Yonatan Shusterman of Israel in the first round.
