Jamie Powell admitted he was left ‘gutted’ after his first-round defeat at the IMMAF World Championships.

The 22-year-old mixed martial artist had been selected to represent Great Britain in Las Vegas.

But things didn’t go to plan for flyweight Powell as he was beaten by the USA’s Carlos Hernandez, the ju-jitsu black belt - also the eventual winner - executing a second-round rear naked choke.

“I was devastated if I’m being honest,” Powell said.

“The fight was going really well until that point. Especially in the first round, I was catching him with more shots than he was to me.

“He was a good fighter. But because it was a straight knockout I didn’t get to fight again.

“I was gutted.”

Powell, of Vauxhall Road, Boston, is still planning to move into the professional ranks. But he wants to leave his amateur career with a victory.

He is hoping that will be the case when he returns to the cage for a bout in Wisbech on August 2.

Powell is currently fighting out of Wisbech’s Avaddon MMA club.
