Boston United may have been downhearted as they left Wembley Stadium following their defeat to Wealdstone... but news of the Bradford City stadium fire soon put football into perspective.

On the same day that the Pilgrims were beaten FA Trophy finalists, county neighbours Lincoln City were involved in a league contest at Bradford City’s Valley Parade ground, where 56 people lost their lives and at least 256 others were injured after a fire spread through the main stand.

“It wasn’t until we got on the bus for the journey home that we started finding out,” said United’s Chris Cook.

“We didn’t have phones or the internet to get news right away back then.

“People were saying ‘have you heard what’s happened?’

“There were people involved with us were from Yorkshire and they were worried that friends of theirs may be at the game.

“It was a big concern. It was a tragedy and very sad to hear.”
