MIDFIELDER Shane Clarke has left Boston United - as he hopes to do battle with David Beckham.

Clarke will fly out for trials in the United States, aiming to land a contract in the MLS.

And that could mean a midfield battle with former England skipper Becks.

Ex-Lincoln City man Clarke, who is on non-contract terms at York Street, announced the news after this afternoon’s 1-0 defeat to AFC Telford United.

However, his departure leaves the Pilgrims struggling for numbers as Gareth Jelleyman has suffered a hamstring injury and Rory Coleman’s loan spell from Scunthorpe United has ended.

“He wants to be a professional footballer and we won’t stand in the way of that,” said manager Rob Scott.

“But it means we are down in numbers.

“We’ll look to bring somebody in. But I don’t know if we can do that by Monday (before Tuesday’s match at Stalybridge Celtic).”

Andy Brown grabbed today’s match-winning goal with a 24th minute header, nodding home well from Sean Newton’s cross.

But Boston could, and should, have snatched a draw - but Danny Sleath saw his penalty saved by Ryan Young, after Sturat Whitehead was adjudged to have handled in the box.
