Boston United aren’t afraid of kicking off their Vanarama North campaign against title favourites Barrow, says captain Scott Garner.
The Bluebirds are being tipped for promotion by the bookies following heavy investment in the summer.
But Garner believes that hosting Barrow at the Jakemans Stadium on Saturday (KO 3pm) will only inspire the Pilgrims.
“We’ve got another big team to start the season,” he said. “But we want to start with a win again and kick on from there.
“It’s good to start like that because you build up for that big, big game. If it’s an easier team then maybe some people can’t get themselves up for it.
“We don’t give up. Last season we ended up scoring a lot of late goals, we’ve got that mentality.”
Barrow know all about Boston’s refusal to throw in the towel following last season’s 4-4 draw at Holker Street, where two last-gasp Ricky Miller goals earned a draw.
Garner scored United’s first competitive goal of last season as the Pilgrims earned a 4-1 victory at Stockport County.
And that victory saw Boston continue their record of registering an opening-day victory in each of the seven seasons since David Newton and Neil Kempster took over the club.
Boston will also travel to Brackley Town on Tuesday (KO 7.45pm).
