Pilgrims resolve to give Trinity the blues in New Year Clash

NEW Year’s Day will witness Boston United entertaining county neighbours Gainsborough Trinity at The Jakemans Stadium (kick-off 3pm).

The Pilgrims have not contested a home fixture — and Trinity a fixture at all — since the sides met in Boston on November 20.

On that occasion, the Pilgrims were 2-1 FA Trophy victors and, having beaten York City in the next round, will be hoping to kick-off the New Year with a maximum three-point haul.

United’s barren spell without fixtures was prolonged following the Boxing Day postponement against Gainsborough at The Northolme and Tuesday’s home clash against Harrogate Town.

Following the New Year’s Day clash against Trinity, the Pilgrims will travel to Eastwood Town in another Blue Square Bet North clash on bank holiday Monday (January 3, kick-off 3pm).

It is the first time since 1981 that United have contested only one fixture during the month of December and the first time ever that Boston have not played a league match during December.

Goalkeeper James McKeown is likely to play the last match of a six-month loan spell on New Year’s Day — ahead of his return to parent club Peterborough United.

The Pilgrims are seeking to recruit a new stopper in the wake of McKeown’s impending departure, although 19-year-old Aaron Butcher does remain another option between the posts following his recent loan spell at Deeping Rangers.

Managers Rob Scott and Paul Hurst will be hoping defender Kieran Murphy can make a return to action following his injury lay-off.

Meanwhile, midfielder John Williams has returned to Scunthorpe United at the end of his month-loan loan spell at The Jakemans Stadium. The 18-year-old made two substitute appearances for the Pilgrims — both in the FA Trophy against Gainsborough and York.

Meanwhile, winger Shane Clancy has extended his loan spell at United Counties League side Sleaford Town into a third and final month.
