Today’s match at Edgeley Park, as seen by Duncan Browne...
MATCH RESULT: Stockport County 3 (Ryan 21, Dennis 44, 49) Boston United 2 (Piergianni 39, Southwell 83)
WHAT WE EXPECTED: A close and cagey affair. United possibly wouldn’t be starting too gung-ho, concentrating on keeping things tight at the back following Tuesday’s seeing to at the hands of Oxford City. However, there could well be a winner as the two teams have managed just three draws in 15 matches between them - without a single stalemate being played out at Edgeley Park this season.
WHAT WE GOT: The complete opposite. Both teams set out their intentions early on, with the two opponents very much putting the emphasis on offence and not defence. The difference was the - in complete contrast to the previous year - it was the hosts and not the away side which put them away. Although County keeper Danny Hurst deserves a lot of credit for some great saves.
MAGIC MOMENT: Jamie McGhee broke down the left, beat his man and played in a low cross which Dayle Southwell instinctively smashed - on the swivel - towards goal. Unlucky for him, Hurst pulled off a tremendous one-handed stop.
MAN OF THE MATCH: For Boston both Jamie McGhee and Kaine Felix offered threats down the flanks, but striker Dayle Southwell plugged away. Despite being thwarted by Hurst - after getting himself in good positions - he didn’t give up and grabbed himself a late goal.
GOAL OF THE GAME: The McGhee-Piergianni-Southwell combination worked well ina day of close-range finishes.
ONE TO WATCH: County keeper Danny Hurst proved the difference with a number of fine reaction stops. Also commanded his area well and refused to be troubled by Zak Mills’ long throws.
REF WATCH: Tom Nield blotted his copybook with a couple of needless yellows and that red card shown to Piergianni definitely smacked of playing to the home crowd. Apart from that, he let play run well.
RATINGS: Farman 7, Mills 7, Steer 7, Dowie 6, Garner 6, Piergianni 6, McGhee 7, Galinski 7 (Fallah 57, 5), Southwell 7, Felix 7 (Barlow 80, 5), Meadows 6 (Hollingsworth HT, 6); Subs (not used): Marshall, Vince.
