Tom James is ready to prove he has what it takes to play in Australia's top flight after signing for Perth Glory.

The 27-year-old is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow British attackers Robbie Fowler and Steve McGarry - who won the Conference title with Boston United - and pull on the club's purple shirt in the A-League.

"It felt great to get the call from Perth. I felt I deserved it to be in a professional environment, but it probably is about 10 years too late," said James, who has experienced a whirlwind time lately.

"That wasn't the best news I had that month. I had a little boy born the day before they called me, so it was very hard to top that proud moment of becoming a dad."

Bostonian James - who played for Boston Town, Spalding United and Wisbech in England after coming throigh the Boston United youth ranks - is now spending hi time with son Thiago and attempting to break into the Glory first team.

He wasn't named in the match day squad as Perth won 1-0 against Central Coast Mariners this morning as the A-League returned to action.

However, he is determined to build a bright future by making the most of the deal he has signed with the Glory, which covers the rest of the campaign.

"I'm 100 per cent up for proving myself," added James, who has lived in Australia for the past six years.

"It's a seven week deal to see out the season and finals, with an eye on next season."

James is attempting to catch the eye of Glory manager Tony Popovic, the former Australia international and ex-Crystal Palace defender.

But he has already impressed Popovic's Socceroos teammate Luke Wilkshire, the former Middlesbrough and Bristol City right back, his manager at previous club Woollongong Wolves.

He scored 24 times for the Wolves last season, claiming the Golden Boot and Player of the Year Award for the National Premier Leagues NSW, where the club finished first and won the NPL Finals.
