Matt Tootle didn't think twice about agreeing a new Boston United deal - because he wants to leave his mark on the club.

The right back impressed at the Jakemans Community Stadium last season after linking up with the Pilgrims in the summer.

After 15 appearances in amber and black the National League North season was made null and void.

But when manager Craig Elliott offered former Crewe Alexandra, Shrewsbury Town and Notts County defender Tootle the chance to have another crack at promotion with the Pilgrims he was happy to stay on.

"Last year when I signed it was a time where everything was a bit of a mess; football, coronavirus, nobody knew what was happening," Tootle said.

"I was over the moon to get that sorted last year and I said to the gaffer that I've only seen a snippet of what this club is. I've only really experienced a little bit of what it's about and I love it.

"When he rang me a couple of weeks ago to say he wanted me to sign a new deal I genuinely didn't hesitate."

Boston was Tootle's first taste of part-time football. While friends have tried to convince him to try to force his way back into the pro game, the 30-year-old believes he still has work to do with the Pilgrims.

"To be honest, a lot of people have said to me I should be playing higher - wait out until the summer and go on trial," he added.

"But I'm not a player who bounces around a lot of different clubs. I like to be at a club and make my mark.

"I said to the gaffer 'I'm not done here'. I want to be part of somethings, taking this club where it should go.

"I'm really excited about signing and hopefully, more importantly, I can help the club get back into the National League and one step closer to where they should be."
