Goals from Jordan Nuttell and Alex Beck weren’t enough to prevent Boston Town suffering a 3-2 UCL Premier home defeat to Northampton Spencer on Saturday.
The Poachers - missing the influential Lori Borbely - remain seventh in the table depsite the loss, writes Jez Ashberry.
The visitors - who had taken Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side Daventry Town to penalties in a county cup tie in midweek - went ahead after 32 minutes following a mistake by Loz Lambley which left Matt Long to score with a deflected shot from a cross by Ashley Clamp.
And Spencer made it 2-0 before the break with Long again taking advantage of hesitant defending.
Matt Kennedy replaced Michael Wood at the interval as the Poachers went about trying to reverse what was a flattering scoreline for the away side.
And two goals in two minutes brought them roaring back into the game.
First Nuttell slammed into the top corner from the edge of the box after Jack Wightwick pulled it back from the byline.
Then Alex Beck stabbed home from close range after Aaron Eyett’s effort from a Wightwick cross was blocked.
Mark Angel’s men were now unrecognisable from the first half.
Kennedy was causing havoc, first forcing Spencer into a scrambling clearance from a free-kick and then seeing a clever lob over the keeper go just too high.
The game had developed into an end-to-end tussle, with James Doughty called into action to pull off a fine one-handed save low to his left to deny Clamp.
Kennedy curled another free-kick just wide but it was Spencer who struck the decisive blow after 82 minutes.
Simon Ashton failed to win the ball when trying to tackle Ryan Dove, who was able to square for Jack Bartley to net from close range.
The visitors were then given a chance to put the match beyond Town’s reach when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Doughty on Bartley.
Luke Stone hit the post with his spot-kick but the Poachers were unable to force an equaliser as tempers boiled over in the closing stages, with Angel and one of the Spencer bench sent from the dugout.
TOWN: Doughty, Lambley, Parker, Field, S Ashton, Wood (Kennedy), Fleming (Battersby), Eyett, Beck, Nuttell, Wightwick.
