Boston-born footballer Mick Vinter has died, aged 65.

The forward played for Boston United as a teenager from 1970-71 before going on to forge a successful career in the game with the likes of Notts County, Wrexham, Oxford United and Mansfield Town.

Vinter, who passed away on Monday, had been a victim of early onset dementia for many years.

A Magpies hero, Vinter bagged 54 goals in 186 games for Notts County between 1971 and 1979 before moving on to Wrexham for three years, where he scored 25 times in 101 outings.

From 1982-84 he was at Oxford where he scored 21 in 69 games and, after his spell with Mansfield, where he was a key member of the Stags' Division Four promotion-winning side in 1985-1986, he moved on to Newport County, netting six goals in 32 games.

He completed his career in non-league with Gainsborough Trinity, Matlock Town and Oakham United.
