Boston United have put sales of season tickets on hold.

The Pilgrims' hoped to kick off the new 2020-21 season in front of fans, but this morning's comments from cabinet member Michael Gove suggest that may not be the case across elite sport.

United chairman David Newton said: "We had held off selling season tickets until last week when it appeared that a start to the season on October 3 was very likely.

"Clubs had carried out a great deal of work to ensure their grounds were Covid secure and the test events were going ahead as planned, albeit with greatly reduced capacities.

"Clearly, we now need to wait and see what happens in light of the Cabinet Office Minister's statement. The sale of season tickets will therefore be suspended."

Boston were also expecting to play some early matches at Gainsborough Trinity's Northolme stadium, while construction work continues at the Jakemans Community Stadium.

"We had stated that refunds would not be available if the season did not commence, however that was to cover the scenario where the start of the season was continually delayed and then commenced when the majority of the season costs had been incurred," Mr Newton added.

"Initially the funds that have been received over the past few days from season ticket sales will be held until more clarity around the potential start to the season is received.

"We will, of course, keep in touch with the ticket purchasers. Clearly this is a very difficult time for all clubs as it is now some seven months with very little income and clubs in non-league rely on the income from ticket sales and sponsorship.

"I hope a way forward can be found that not only protects the health of everyone, but also ensures clubs can survive this very difficult period."
