Two Boston United squad members look set to leave, but one player could still stay at Jakemans Community Stadium

Boston United have done a lot of their business early this summer, with 14 of last season's squad already signed up for the 2021-22 campaign.

Manager Craig Elliott has also stated he would like Harrogate Town winger Joe Leesley to return for another loan spell, as well as addressing the type of players he wants to bring in to bolster his team.

But three members of last term's squad have not signed new deals.

Elliott remains in talks with one of the trio, but two look set to depart the Jakemans Community Stadium when their contracts are up this summer.

Elliott told The Standard that striker Jordan Thewlis has been offered a new deal, but he expects the club's 2019-20 leading scorer to leave.

"Jordan Thewlis will probably be moving on," Elliott said of the forward who scored 22 goals in 53 appearances.

"I offered him a deal but I think he's got other offers elsewhere.

"Fair play to him, he was an outstanding player for us but I understand his reasons."

Thewlis has been a fan favourite at United and will go down in folklore as the man who scored the Pilgrims' goal, an instinctive header, in their FA Cup defeat to Rochdale in the final big game hosted at York Street.

His goals - including a perfect hat-trick at Telford, and two marvellous solo efforts against Bradford Park Avenue and Southport - helped United to the 2019-20 play-off final and a top seven position last season before the campaign was made null and void.

Elliott did not elaborate on the deal offered, but at 28 Thewlis is at a stage in his career where the security of a long-term contract could be tempting.

Young defender Lewis Gibbens also looks set to depart.

The 21-year-old saw two impressive loan spells with United ended by serious injuries.

After leaving Mansfield Town he signed permanently with Boston last summer.

But after almost a year out of action he was lacking match fitness and struggled to force his way into the National League North's meanest defence, joining Worksop Town on loan twice as he sought game time.

However, with the Northern Premier League season suspended then curtailed, Gibbens staill hasn't had the minutes on the pitch he craves.

"Lewis Gibbens needs to play games and the bad luck that lad's had is unbelievable," Elliott added.

Former Manchester United youngster Tyrell Warren may still remain a Pilgrim.

"We're still in talks with Ty and we'll see what happens," Elliott said of the versatile former Salford City man who can play as a right back or in central defence.

Midfielder Mitch Rose was with Boston on a non-contract basis last season.
