Craig Elliott is convinced that Lewis Gibbens will return from Worksop Town an improved player.

The Pilgrims youngster has joined the Tigers on loan, marking his debut with a goal in yesterday's 2-0 win over Spalding United.

The central defender, who joined from Mansfield Town in the summer, featured in the club's 4-2 FA Cup win over AFC Mansfield on October 3, his first competitive match in close to a year following a long-term knee injury.

"He's had one competitive game in the FA Cup after nearly a year," Elliott said.

"It's a long time and I think you could see he just needs more matches.

"I didn't want him to go backwards really and I just think going out on loan to a team doing well will help him.

"Training won't get him to where he needs to be, he needs a good five or six game and I hope he can get that."

Gibbens initially joined Town a fortnight ago but was unable to feature as the United squad were forced to self isolate due to positive COVID-19 tests.

But he marked his return in style as he netted for Craig Parry's side.

"They're a big club at their level. They're well supported and I said to Lewis that playing in front of fans again will be good for him.

"There's no point him sitting in the stands after just one game in a year. I'm confident he'll come back and be ready."
