Horncastle Town under-14s made the trip to Kirton for a match against league title challengers Boston United Community FC on Sunday morning.

Horncastle, from the off, were pushed back deep in their own half. Boston worked well as a unit and were eager to get off the mark first.

This came early on as Town were unable to keep the home side at bay. Boston’s second goal came straight after, with a team working well together, they found Town with their heads still down from the first conceded goal.

Town’s defence and midfield were struggling and manager Julian Howden made the decision after 15 minutes to make a substitution for the better. Alex Edwards came on in place of Robbie Baxter and Town found a new lease of life.

Horncastle began to make waves in Boston’s half, with fantastic team play from Josh Broughton, Morgan Colson and Dylan Loveley. Liam Pickering and Samuel Howden started to team up well down the left which gave the latter time on the ball and he got free to have a couple of shots, but not enough to majorly trouble the Boston United Community keeper.

Jake South, Thomas Fiddies, Eden Norton and Michael Wilson, Town’s back four, worked hard to keep Boston at bay, but 25 minutes into the first half Town went 3-0 down to a well struck shot from outside of the box, on which keeper Jack Tyreman was just unable to get a hand.

A positive half time team talk and a formation change from the manager saw Town come out stronger and looking like a different team altogether. Fiddies moved up front with Howden to make Town’s striking force.

Town pushed deep into Boston’s half and it wasn’t long before Fiddies found the back of the net.

Horncastle’s Edwards and Norton were strong down the right wing and helped Town to break down Boston’s defence. Norton was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with a shot from outside the area which just bounced past the keeper’s right hand post.

Howden did get on the scoresheet with 10 minutes to go, with an easy tap-in to bring the scoreline to 3-2 to Boston.

Town pushed hard for a third and equalising goal but time just ran out before they could manage it.

Horncastle Town under-14s’ next match is away to Lowlands on Sunday with a 10.45am kick-off.
