Boston athletes impress at combined events championships

A select number of athletes represented Lincolnshire in the English Schools Athletic Association’s East Anglian Region Combined Events Championships at Boston.

With the winning teams, together with highest-placed individuals, qualifying for the English Schools National Combined Events finals in September, there was plenty at stake.

In the intermediate boys’ octathlon, Iuri Cardosa finished second position with a total of 3,798 points.

He scored most points in the final discipline, the 1,500m, when his time of 4 mins 47.7 secs earned him 651 points.

Iuri also scored 645 points in the 100m hurdles (15.2 secs).

Jakub Bilinski finished sixth with a total of 3,104 points.

Jakub’s best event was the high jump, where his clearance of 1.66m contributed 512 points to his octathlon total, assisting the Lincolnshire team to second position.

In the junior boys’ pentathlon, Lincs finished as the second team, Kieran Higgs in second place and Jordan Bull seventh.

The junior girls’ pentathlon team finished in third place, with Bethany Denial second, Laura Van Lier 12th and Alice Gibbons 13th.

Laura’s best event was the 75m hurdles, gaining 558 points in 13.1 secs.

The intermediate heptathlon quartet finished second behind Essex.

Zoe Lucas was sixth, with Frances Nuttell.

Frances scored most points in the first event, the 80m hurdles, recording 13.1 secs for 663 points.

She went on to add more than 500 points in both the high jump (1.44m, 555) and long jump (4.94m, 543), finishing with a total of 2,955 points.
