BERNICE Wilson goes into this weekend’s European Indoor Athletics Championships with a celebrity fan backing her for success - Boston boxer Callum Johnson.
Johnson - who is preparing to fight Scunthorpe’s Jodie Meikle in Glasgow on March 12 - told The Standard he will be taking time out of his training this weekend to cheer on the Wyberton sprinter.
This will be Wilson’s first major championships representing Great Britain as she competes in the 60m sprint heats on Saturday, hoping for a place in Sunday’s final.
And after winning Commonwealth Games gold for Scotland, Johnson is right behind a fellow competitor from our area going for a medal at international level.
“I’ll be watching her this weekend. I hope she does well, good luck to her,” said Johnson.
“It’s great to compete for your country and I hope she does well.
“I was in the gym the other Saturday and was watching her on the TV running in Birmingham (at the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix, where Bernice came second) - and she can really run.”
