Boston and District Athletic Club’s senior team snatched an unexpected fourth place in the first of this season’s North of England Track and Field League matches at Cudworth.
Travelling to Yorkshire with a less-than-full-complement of athletes, the Gold Tops representatives at the Dorothy Hyman Track produced a sterling effort, finishing just one point ahead of Bradford to claim fourth place.
The bulk of the points were contributed by the female representatives, with Isabelle Whitehead, Frances Nuttell and Emma Penson producing spirited performances in competition against athletes from Bradford, Grantham, Grimsby, Longwood and Wombwell.
Isabelle marked her return to North of England competition with a string of inspirational results, winning three track events and adding further second and third place points in other events.
She opened the meeting with victory in the 400m hurdles (75.5secs) and followed this with wins in both the 800m (2mins 49.1secs) and 1,500m (5 mins 55.1secs) A races.
In the B long jump a leap measuring 4.30m earned runners-up place and a third finish in the challenging A 100m hurdles event added further points.
Frances won the high jump with a season’s best 1.53m, adding a second in long jump (4.83m) and third in the 100m (14.0secs).
Emma finished third in the 3,000m (16 mins 05.2 secs) and hammer (19.72m).
In the men’s events, Jose Ferriera secured victory in the 800m (2mins 08.6secs) and Ben Lindsey finished fourth in the 1,500m (4mins 53.9secs) and claimed a valuable second position in the B 800m (2mins 25.4 secs).
