Boston and District Athletic Club hosted the second of this season’s Lincolnshire Runner Cross Country League matches at Castledyke Equestrian Centre Sunday.
Described as a traditional cross country course with a variety of terrain, including a water jump, the Castledyke venue provided competitors with a serious endurance challenge.
A blustery, warm breeze added an extra dimension but the forecast showers failed to materilarise as the 50-plus in the under 11 boys and girls’ competition lined up for the first event over 1,420m.
For the Gold Tops, Ryan Firth led the challenge, producing a strong run to finish in a very commendable eighth position.
Matthew Lewis, was second counter in 31st place, just ahead of Haddley Bedford, closing in on 33rd spot.
A year younger and on her first outing for the club, Alex Frick ran really well to claim 39th position.
In the under 13 girls’ race - over a large lap of the course measuring 2,540m - Lucy Raywood entered the finish funnel in 21st position.
In the boys’ contest, over the same route, Hallam Bedford was 13th across the line.
At under 15 boys’ level, despite finding the 4,480m event a tough examination of his fitness and endurance, Alex Riches claimed 11th place at the end.
Improving with every outing, James Roark, in 29th position, finished well inside the first half of the field in the senior/junior/veteran men’s challenge over a demanding 1,160m.
BADAC representatives’ best performances on the day came in the women’s race with Fallon Lafferty featuring at the front of the field right from the gun.
Leading at the end of the first of the three 1,707m laps, Fallon was eventually overtaken on the final lap, but still ran in strongly to finish in a very respectable second place.
There was good team support from a rapidly advancing Emma Penson, who claimed a valuable 26th position at the end of the 5,820m challenge, and Rebecca Grice who produced a very determined effort to complete the Gold Tops’ team trio of counters in 39th place.
On Saturday the third of this season’s Junior Cross Country events will be held at Boston and District’s B-Hive venue, from 10am.
There will be races for under sevens, nines, 11s, 13s on the day.
