TWO Boston-area runners have returned from the European Veteran Indoor Championships with gold medals.
Frampton’s Les Percival picked up his medal as part of Great Britain’s all-conquering 4x200m relay team, while he also reached the final of the 200m event, where gold went to Boston and District AC competitor Steve Peters.
“To represent your country is an honour, but to stand on the podium while they play God Save the Queen is a wonderful feeling,” said Les, 57.
Both Les and Steve competed in the over 55s age category in Ghent, Belgium.
After making their way through the heats in the individual sprint event, they lined up among the six fastest competitors in their age group in Europe, which included four Brits.
Steve crossed the line in 24.13 secs to claim the title, while Les was sixth in 26.3 secs.
However, Les soon received that winning feeling himself when he was called up to the GB relay team. As he ran the anchor leg, it was Les who carried the baton across the finish line for Britain, perhaps changing his outlook on future events.
“This was going to be my swansong,” he admitted. “But after winning gold, it has encouraged me to keep on competing.”
Les represents the West Norfolk Club but trains at Boston’s Princess Royal Sports Arena.
