Boston Wheelers’ Maddy Verdegaal has earned her category 2 racing licence following a series of successes.
She took first place in the Milton Keynes Bowl Series, where her best results of second and third were enough to see her finish first overall.
And then competing at a race in York, she claimed fifth spot, gaining enough points for her full race licence.
This weekend she took part in the Victoria Park Criterium in Leamington Spa, competing in an Elite 1-4 category race, against some of the best riders in the country.
Maddy raced well to finish her two races in fifth and 10th positions.
Taking in 100 miles of Lincolnshire’s roads in and around the south of the county, the Boston Wheelers completed their first club century ride of the year - the Fixation 100.
The century is a traditional milestone for cyclists, and for two of the club’s newer members, Debbie Winrow and Karen Maw, this one marked their very first.
Never an easy ride, Sunday’s event was notable for a strong and cool wind consistently blowing in from the North Sea.
The group of riders completed their circuit in a creditable time of little more than six-and-a-half hours.
Amongst the group were four hardy members who completed the distance on single-speed fixed-gear cycles.
Ride organiser Alan Sharpe explained: “These bikes hark back to the simplicity and pureness of the early days of racing.
“The first editions of the Tour de France would have been raced and won on bikes not too far removed from what we four rode today”.
In June, continuing the heritage theme, Alan, together with club members Paul Winrow and Kenny Doig, will take part in Eroica Britannia - the British cycling festival held for three days in Bakewell, Derbyshire, and only open to bikes built pre-1987.
The Wheelers’ Go-Ride sessions are still going strong at the Princess Royal Sports Arena on Saturday Mornings (10.30am-11.30am), and are open to any under 16 who has a bike.
The club also offers rides for all abilities througout the week.
