BOSTON and District Athletic Club teams gave a good account of themselves at the second of this season’s National Young Athletes Northern 2 East matches at Grimsby – establishing the Gold Tops in a mid-table position.
In the under 13 boys’ age group, Blake Garwell won a very well-judged 1,500m, outsprinting the Bingley Harriers contestant in the final straight and recording 5 mins 14 secs for a fine victory.
Blake also won the shot with a putt of 6.70m and was narrowly beaten in the 200m sprint, clocking 29.9secs.
Under 17 Josh Maund also achieved two firsts, winning both the 1,500m steeplechase and the 1,500m flat, recording 4 mins 38.2 secs.
In the 800m race, Josh crossed the finish line in second place in 2 mins 18 secs.
Maria Hollingsworth was in a class of her own in the under 17 women’s 80m hurdles and, despite the strong headwind, recorded 12.2 secs out in front.
She also won the 100m in 13.1 secs and completed the treble, taking a clear victory in the 200m sprint.
Frances Nuttell won the under 15 girls’ 75m hurdles in 12.7 secs and added points for the Gold Tops in high jump and 100m (15.3 secs).
Becky Locking won the under 17 shott with 7.79m and clinched a second in the 100m, clocking a personal best 13.2 secs.
Hermione Wright achieved victory in the 200m running strongly right through the finish line to clock 30.2 secs and also claimed second place in the long jump with a leap of 4.04m.
Isobel Rushby was second over 1,500m at under 15 level and added points in the discus.
In his first outing in the 2012 league, Daniel Martin contributed three fourth places in 800m (2 mins 44 secs), 400m and steeplechase.
Robert Porter was fourth in long jump (4.19m ), fifth in 200m and seventh over 100m.
Lara Smith recorded 14.3 secs for second position in the 100m and added a fourth in the 200m, recording 30.3 secs.
In his 100m sprint, Mark Penniston clocked 15.5 secs in his first Young Athletes League outing.
Luke MaCleod added value in 800m (2 mins 45.7 secs), shot (6.29m) and hammer (15.03m).
