Tennis aces aid county

Boston Tennis Club’s Dominic Beesley, Henry Beesley, Lewis Fisher, Joe Woolley, Emily Hawkesworth, Dana Kenneally-Forrester and Madeleine Verdegaal all represented Lincolnshire at the weekend in the Aegon Junior County Cup.

The Aegon County Cup is contested by a total of 44 counties from England, Scotland and Wales.

The Lincolnshire boys’ under 18 team won all their three matches at the weekend.

Competing at Hull, they beat Bedfordshire 6-3, Staffordshire 9-0 and Cornwall 5-1.

The girls played at Barnstaple, North Devon, and lost their three contests.

They went down to Dorset, Cornwall and Wiltshire.

Dominic Beesley has been selected as one of a group of players for a two-week trip with the Lawn Tennis Association to train at the Barcelona Total Tennis Academy, one of the top training academies in Spain.

Boston’s Matthew Gedney was selected as part of a four-player team to represent the Midlands in Cardiff.

Each player played a singles, then teamed up for a boy’s doubles and girl’s doubles.

The Midlands lost a narrow match to the North, followed by another narrow loss to the South East.

A final group match against Ireland saw Midlands pick up their first win of the weekend and left them finishing third in the group.

On the final day the Midlands were playing Wales and they came through 4-2 to finish fifth overall.

Matthew finished by winning two out of three singles and all three of his doubles matches.
