BOSTON Tennis Club’s Emily Hiew and Peter Elphick have been crowned the new over 35s mixed doubles champions.
The annual Open Over 35s Mixed Doubles Tournament, sponsored by Bombay Brasserie, was held at the Sleaford Road club.
Competitors were split between two round robin groups.
Group A was won by Diane Sharpe and Antony Hulley, who progressed through this stage of the competition without losing a match.
Second in the group were Hiew and Elphick.
Mary Clay and Terry Wilkinson won Group B, while Rachel Atkinson and David Makins, equal on matches won, were runners-up on account of less games won.
In the semi-finals, both of which went to a tie-break at 5-5, it was Sharpe and Hulley who beat Atkinson and Makins.
In the other semi, Hiew and Elphick were two match points down, trailing 2-5, but came back to win the tie-break against the duo of Clay and Wilkinson.
In the final, having made an amazing recovery in the previous match and also having lost to the opposition at the group stage, it was Hiew and Elphick who took the title, beating Sharpe and Hulley 6-3.
In the Lincolnshire Veterans’ League, Boston men’s first team remain unbeaten rafter a 6-2 win over Eastgate.
The team of Richard Longworth, James Newton, Chris Cook and Ray Frankish proved too strong for the Lincoln team.
The men’s second team also had a match away at Grimsby, but lost out 2-6.
The team of Sev Smura, Peter Elphick, Mike Sweeney and Richard Tupper were locked at 2-2 after the first round.
But although it was close in the second round, the score tipped the way of the home team, giving a final 6-2 result to Grimsby.
