William Wright got to rub shoulders with an Olympic gold medallist while warming up for a schools cross country championships at Royal Shrewsbury School on Sunday.
At the time he did not know who the man he met was, but he later discovered it that it was Kenyan John Ngugi, winner of the 5,000m at the Seoul Olympics and a five-time world cross country champion, arguably the greatest distance runner of his generation.
William, who runs for Nene Valley Harriers, was competing over a gruelling 4.2km course which he labelled ‘the most testing course that I have run’.
William was competing against eight other schools from the Midlands and the West Country and, against 108 other runners in his under 13s race, he finished in ninth in his first competitive race of the autumn.
After the presentations he was delighted to again meet Ngugi, and this time get to see his Olympic gold medal.
