A new croquet club is being launched in the town - and members are inviting you you try the sport out.

The Boston Croquet Club has been formed by five friends who are eager to create an atmosphere where people of all ages can enjoy a social atmosphere, or play competitively.

“In some ways it’s a very modern game,” said Dennis Welbourn-Cook, a founder member and project co-ordinator.

“We want to get rid of that old-fashioned image, because croquet is a sport which is on the rise.

“It’s played in a lot of countries and also by a lot of young people.”

The club was formed with the help of an £8,000 Sport England grant and the club will be based at The Sportsman on Rosebery Avenue.

Members are currently in the process of taking stock of new equipement and aim to have four lawns up and running as soon as possible.

“We want to create an atmosphere where people can get exactly what they want from croquet,” Mr Welbourn-Cook continued.

“Whether that’s the social side of the game or playing competitively.”

Mr Welbourn-Cook added that he believes the sport is also a great pastime for the whole family and something which can get them all involved together.

“We would also like to hear from families, as it is a sport which can be enjoyed by everyone together,” he continued.

Boston Croquet Club will aim to offer both versions of the sport - association croquet and golf croquet - and plans taster days in the near furure.

It is also hoped that coaching days involving experts from the British Croquet Association will be organised for the near future.
