After the highs of their opening week victory in the Midland Premier League, the Boston Buccaneers experienced a 52-8 defeat at the hands of last year’s champions the Northampton Demons.
The Buccs were put to the sword at the Princess Royal Sports Arena, in contrast to their debut victory in the competition at Derby City seven days earlier.
Boston had hoped to field a strong team for this tough encounter, but injuries and work commitments forced last-minute changes.
It didn’t take long before the Demons opened their account as great support play and slick ball handling led to an easy score under the posts.
This was to be the order of the day with the Demons seemingly scoring at will.
The Buccaneers were constantly on the back foot and had very little ball to work with, any gains made were met with stern resistance.
However, the Buccaneers did score two late consolation tries, courtesy of Michael Baldwin and Will Scupham.
The Buccaneers’ man of the Match was Sean Templeton for his strong ball carrying.
The Buccaneers played well below their best against a well-drilled and skilful team at the top of their game.
On Saturday Boston host the Leamington Royals.
