Yellowbelly bragging rights are on the line for Boston Rugby Club this season.

After winning back-to-back promotios in his first two seasons at the Boardsides, Willem Jonker is preparing his squad for life in the Midlands 3 East North.

And that means derby clashes with Grimsby, Lincoln, Sleaford and Skegness, who were promoted as runners-up to Boston.

“People in the local area want to play for the top club,” Jonker said.

“One way of proving that is by going for promotion.

“Another is to give an opponent a good hiding.

“Maybe that makes the opposition’s players think ‘maybe I should have joined that club instead.’

“Players always want to be involved in derby matches, bragging rights are important for all clubs.”

The Blue and Whites have strengthened their squad, with both Craig Dowse and Anthony Buckberry returning from Spalding.

After two consecutive promotions (the squad are pictured celebrating last season’s success), Jonker is now targeting another good league position.

He added: “We’re aiming for a top four place. Maybe we could finish second - or even first - and go up.

“But we’re looking at the top four right now.”

Boston will host Peterborough in a pre-season match on Saturday and entertain Spalding next Thursday.

Jonker says he will field his strongest XVs, but also blood in promising under 17s.
