Boston Rugby Club’s under 16s were edged out 19-14 by Ilkeston in their NLD Shield semi-final.

The Blue and Whites narrowly missed out on a place in the final following a closely-fought contest.

Both sides spent the early parts of the game, played at Sleaford, sharing possession and threatening each other’s try line.

It took until the 21st minute for the first points to be scored as Ilkeston touched down.

Ilkeston then spent the rest of the half trying to build on their lead and, with the last play of the half, they scored another try following a scrum to lead 12-0.

Any thoughts that Ilkeston may have had about running away with the game were proved wrong in the first minute of the second half as immediate pressure from the kick off earned a Boston scrum near the opposition try line.

After securing the ball, Joby Ancell powered over from close range for the try.

A conversion from Tom Hobbs gave hope to Boston.

The game now swung in Boston’s favour with the Blue and Whites continually threatening the Ilkeston line.

In the 62nd minute they took the lead as Ancell again touched down and Hobbs converted.

Boston looked like they were going to hold on for the victory but in the closing minutes, Ilkeston scored a converted try in the corner following a free kick.
