Film reviewer Gavin Miller takes a look at some of the films being released over the Christmas and New Year period.

○ Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom (January 3): After his recent passing, this biopic of Nelson Mandela is even more poignant.

Let’s hope despite mixed early reviews that Britain’s own Idris Elba does the great man justice – with Skyfall actress Naomie Harris playing his wife Winnie. The film chronicles Mandela’s life – including his 27 years in prison – in his battle to unite a segregated South Africa against the backdrop of Apartheid.

○ The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (December 26): Ben Stiller looks to get his career back on track after a few box-office stumbles, and hopes this remake of the much-loved 1947 original will fit the bill. He stars as a day-dreamer who escapes his life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action across the globe.

○ 47 Ronin (December 26): After taking a five-year hiatus since the lukewarm The Day the Earth Stood Still – The Matrix’s Keanu Reeves looks to reclaim his former A-lister tag in this Japanese-inspired fantasy thriller. He stars as a nomadic sword-wielding warrior who joins a team of 47 outcast samurai seeking vengeance for the death of their master.
